A new report from ECPAT UK and Missing People reveals significant issues with child victims of trafficking and unaccompanied children going missing from care. Trafficked children continue to be one of the groups who are most at risk of going missing in the UK with nearly 2 in 5 going missing in 2024. The report also found that unaccompanied children also remain at risk of missing with a rate of 13% compared to 10% of the looked after child population in England. These children remain at high risk of going missing from care in the UK, a persistent finding over the last decade which shows a continuing and significant failure in safeguarding. Many systems and processes in force in the UK currently appear to be exacerbating this risk, with little meaningful consideration of, or ability to, provide care and safety for these children.
