FREE Training: Care for child victims of trafficking: transitions at 18, safe accommodation, and homelessness

ECPAT UK’s long-standing CPD accredited Training and Practice Development Programme is offering a new pilot course, developed in response to the housing and homelessness crisis faced by many trafficked young people across London and beyond, as well as to the ongoing high levels of vulnerability and risk of exploitation amongst this cohort of young people.

With the help of our wonderful funders at Coram we are able to pilot this course free of charge, with lunch provided, to frontline professionals working across London.

When?

We are running the course on two dates at our London office in N1:

Tuesday 14th October, 09:30-16:30

Tuesday 21st October, 09:30-16:30

Who should attend?

Developed in collaboration with the ECPAT UK Youth Advisory Group to provide frontline professionals with valuable insights and practice advice around what they can do to support care-leavers and young adults outside the care system, who have been through child trafficking and exploitation, and who are now navigating complex and under-resourced housing and other adult focussed benefits and support systems.

This is a practical course geared towards frontline professionals working with survivors of child trafficking in the immigration and asylum system, who are approaching 18, or are now young adults, including both care-leavers, and young adults who experienced trafficking as a child but are not in receipt of leaving care services. This includes:
• Local authority personal advisors and social workers in leaving care and resettlement teams
• Key workers from semi-independent accommodation providers
• Local authority housing officers
• Voluntary sector support workers and case-workers The course is suitable for those who have already attended child trafficking training or who have a good understanding and working knowledge of definitions and types of child trafficking, the NRM, and immigration and asylum processes.

What will the course cover?

  • The long-term impact of trauma on psychological and practical support needs.
  • Different pathways towards independence: housing and support entitlements of full care-leavers, qualifying care-leavers, age-disputed young people and young adults outside the leaving care system.
  • Eligibility for different forms of housing and support, including through the National Referral Mechanism, mainstream housing and community care services.
  • Advocacy tools to demonstrate eligibility for priority need and/or specialist trafficking housing and support services.
  • Working together to challenge decisions that may increase vulnerability and risk of harm
  • Trauma-informed, culturally competent and person-centred communication skills to support young people to understand and navigate the systems and respond effectively to challenges prevent and respond to homelessness.
  • Strategies to reduce risk of further harm, exploitation and re-exploitation.
